Ask for a definition of the church today and you will get a variety of answers....
- The building on the corner
- The people who have accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior
- A place to meet friends and share common interest
- A place to serve the community
- A place to meet with and worship God
- A place where they always ask for money: a place rigid in its rules and full of hypocrites.
When you contemplate the role and purpose of the church, take time to contemplate what Christ was doing when the church started.......He was making disciples!
Are you a disciple? What is your purpose and reason for attending church, or better yet what is your reason for saying you are a Christian?
Is it because you answered a question a certain way and you were told you are now a member? Or did you find yourself at a baptismal pool or font and were told you had "gained entrance" to the church?
In contemplating this I want you to spend time on thinking about why Jesus making disciples was the basis of the beginning of the church. Maybe you should consider what being a disciple is really all about.
What did Jesus say the requirement was to be a disciple? Do you fit this or not?
I would love to hear any thoughts you have on the subject.
Blessings to you all and have a great Labor Day!
In Christ,
Fr. John
