Sermon Recap: “Standing Firm Against Temptation” by Fr. John Mozingo
Today, Fr. John Mozingo delivered a powerful sermon on a topic that hits close to home for all of us: temptation. Whether it’s the temptation to lash out in anger, to take the easy way out, or to rely on ourselves instead of God, we all face struggles that test our faith. But as Fr. John reminded us, we don’t have to face these challenges alone. With God’s help, we can stand firm and overcome.
Here’s a brief recap of the key points from the sermon:
1. Recognizing Temptations (James 1:17-27)
Fr. John started by exploring the words of James, who urges us to be “quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.” In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to react impulsively or get caught up in arguments, especially on social media. But James challenges us to go beyond just listening to God’s Word—we need to act on it. True faith is reflected in our actions, not just our words.
Illustration: Fr. John used a simple yet effective illustration: a mirror. Just as we wouldn’t walk away from a mirror without fixing our messy hair, we shouldn’t hear God’s Word without making changes in our lives. Being a “doer of the word” means aligning our actions with our beliefs.
2. Trusting in God Rather Than Ourselves (Psalm 146)
Next, Fr. John took us through Psalm 146, which warns against putting our trust in human leaders or even in ourselves. We often like to think we’ve got everything under control, but the truth is, we all have limits. The Psalm reminds us that true help comes from God, who supports the vulnerable, gives sight to the blind, and lifts up those who are struggling.
Illustration: Fr. John compared this to building a sandcastle on the beach—it looks impressive for a moment, but the tide will wash it away. Trusting in our own abilities is like building on sand; it’s fragile and temporary. But when we trust in God, we’re building on solid ground that won’t be shaken.
3. God’s Power to Transform (Isaiah 35:4-7a)
Isaiah gives us a beautiful image of God’s transformative power: He opens the eyes of the blind, unstops the ears of the deaf, and makes the lame leap like a deer. Fr. John emphasized that God can transform any situation, no matter how hopeless it seems. In our lives, this means that God can turn our struggles into strengths, our fears into faith.
Illustration: To make this point, Fr. John used the example of a piece of coal transforming into a diamond under pressure. What seems ordinary and rough can become something strong and valuable through the process. God’s grace works in us the same way, turning our challenges into opportunities for growth.
4. Jesus as the Example and Healer (Mark 7:31-37)
Finally, Fr. John highlighted the story of Jesus healing a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment. Jesus took the man aside and gave him personal attention, showing that God cares about each of our individual struggles. When Jesus said, “Ephphatha,” or “be opened,” it was more than just a physical healing—it was a call for us to open our hearts to God’s grace and guidance.
Illustration: Fr. John likened this to having a locked door and trying every wrong key, only for Jesus to come along with the master key that opens it effortlessly. When we face temptations or struggles, we need to let Jesus unlock the solutions that only He can provide.
Conclusion and Call to Action:
Temptations are a part of life, but we don’t have to face them on our own. Fr. John encouraged us to take the lessons from today’s sermon and apply them this week. Identify one temptation you’re facing and bring it to God in prayer every day. Ask for His grace to stand firm and to act in ways that reflect your faith.
